Some information about MetalCrawler.net
Vision
The aim of MetalCrawler.net is to give visitors an objective overview and ranking
of metal music. MetalCrawler does this by scanning known quality review sites and
extracting the ratings these sites provide for the material they review.
All found ratings are always credited to the original author and are provided together
with a link to the review in question. The purpose of MetalCrawler therefore is
also to connect quality websites related to metal music and be a portal to support
the metal scene in general.
Copyright notice
MetalCrawler only stores the minimal information needed to rate albums and artists,
which is limited to the album name, release year, artist name, reviewer name, review
url, publication date and rating.
MetalCrawler does not store review texts, pictures or any copyrighted material,
but encourages the user to visit the review site in question for more information.

Ratings
MetalCrawler extracts the ratings of external review sites and uses this information
to calculate weighted scores for albums and artists. There are two mechanisms that
determine the final score: credibility and scale.
Credibility
Weighing is done based on the credibility of the review source: a higher credibility
results in a higher weight in the final weighted score. Credibility of a review
source depends on the amount of material reviewed and the spread of ratings applied
to this material compared to other review sources.
Scale
Next to credibility, the ratings of every author will be adjusted to make sure every
rating is done on the same scale. This adjustment is based on all the ratings an
author has given to the material that is reviewed.
Final score
The final score is based on a scale of 10 and shown next to the
icon. Credibility and scale for each author are calculated in a way to keep the
final rating as objective and fair as possible. For that reason, the exact logic
behind these calculations is not public and subject to change if modifications are
deemed necessary. All authors on every review site receive their personal credibility
and scale adjustment. Ratings for artists are based on the weighted ratings of their
albums and the amount of reviews the artist received in total.
Ranking (#)
The ranking (preceeded by the '#' sign) is given for artists and albums, and relates
directly to the score. The artist or album with the highest score recieves #1. Next
to that, only artists and albums that got scores from at least 3 different review
sites are ranked.
Percentile (%)
A percentile rating is given next to the score for albums and artists if they have
a rank. The lower this number is, the better, e.g. a percentile of 1% means that
99 out of 100 ranked albums or artists have a lower weighted score. Therefore this number,
opposed to score and ranking, gives a relative ranking of an artist or album compared
to all others that are ranked.
